Sharing my postpartum mental health journey was something I’d always wanted to do, but I was filled with apprehension and worry about doing it. Reliving those first 4 months postpartum again is definitely traumatizing and I really didn’t know how I could talk about it without bursting into tears. But then enters Kanya. Probably one of the most fearless mothers I know and she asked if I would like to talk about my journey on her podcast. And as scared as I was, boy am I glad I did it. Honestly, I couldn’t have asked for a more safer space to share my story than @thedarkestlightpodcast

So here’s my journey in a nutshell. I suffered moderate postpartum depression and mild postpartum anxiety in the first 4 months postpartum. The only reason I came out of it is because of Tavasya and my husband - he was my only source of support and strength, the only hand holding onto me when I was sinking into depression, and I can’t imagine what I would have done if I didn’t have him. This experience has changed me. Changed my perspective, changed my goals and even changed my relationships with family & friends.

I’m only 9 months into motherhood. Whilst the start was definitely a rollercoaster, I’m so happy to say that I’m feeling good and I absolutely love being Tavasya’s mother. She truly is my reason for happiness 💫

I’m so grateful to Kanya: for giving me the opportunity to tell my story and for also connecting me to two amazing mothers who also shared their very personal perinatal mental health journeys. The hour went by so fast without us even knowing; there were tears, laughter and more than ever, there was comfort in telling our stories.

I hope us sharing our stories helps atleast one new mother know that she is not alone and educates new parents and parents to be. There is so much I’m working on in this space and I hope to share it with you all soon so that no body ever has to go through this thinking they’re alone.

Hello to all the new faces on here!

My name is Dr. Rashmira Balasuriya and I’m a medical doctor trained in Family Medicine with a special interest in Sexual and Reproductive Health.

Whilst I don’t do consultations over Instagram, medical education is one of my passions and I use this platform to share useful information with both my fellow medics and the general public. I also use my page to share the realities of being a doctor in Sri Lanka and to remind everyone that we as doctors are also human.

Whilst studying for my Masters in Sexual Health, I also work at the Family Planning Association of Sri Lanka and have my private practice. I also am the director of the Arka Initiative, an organization working hard to improve Sexual and Reproductive Health in Sri Lanka.

As a new mum, I’m now truly learning what it’s like to juggle multiple hats. Now 8 months in and I can truly say that Tavasya is my main priority in life, everything else comes after 🤗

A common question I’m always asked is “How do

A common question I’m always asked is “How do you balance it all?”. It’s a pretty loaded question and before motherhood I would have definitely said my life is run by schedules and organizers. However, now heavily into motherhood, the truth of the matter is THERE IS NO BALANCE.

I’m literally a 🦆 in water - calm on the surface, but paddling like crazy to stay afloat. If I’m thriving as a mother, my work suffers and if I’m killing it at my career, I’m away from my baby.

Some days are amazing, others not so much; but I always remind myself that I just need to make it through the day and tomorrow is a new day with a new start. Not going to lie, it took me a while to be comfortable with the mess and actually enjoy this “new” chapter of my life. This only happened when I realised how unrealistic it is to demand that women MUST and ALWAYS keep everything in check at all times and maintain “a balanced life”. It is an unachievable and unreal perfection that will kill your happiness if you break you back trying to achieve it.

So here’s my truth - my life (and the lives of so many other women) is a never ending juggling act; one that requires an exponential amount of coordination and a strong support system. It’s messy, emotional and a rollercoaster - but I love it and I wake up everyday now with the aim to do the best I can do for myself and my family. Nothing will be perfect or balanced, but it will be enough 💫
